“Science to do yourself – All Girls can make Tech” – this was the motto of the Summer Camp for girls, which took place at the end of August at UAS Technikum Wien with practical support from professionals. At the end of the event, the camp was attended by a distinguished visitor: Minister for Women’s Affairs Susanne Raab met the girls on site and, together with Sylvia Geyer, Rector of UAS Technikum Wien, presented the graduation certificates.

For one week, participants from the *peppa<\/a> girls’ center and all over Vienna completed a colorful workshop program ranging from physics to electronics to robotics. The girls and young women between the ages of 14 and 20 were also given the opportunity to practice important skills for their future careers in presentation, video shooting and job application training.

“We need to get girls much more excited about STEM fields and encourage them to shape their futures according to their own ideas and not let anything deter them from their desired career paths. The ALMAH Summer Camp is therefore a great opportunity for girls to immerse themselves in areas such as technology, physics or electronics, to experiment and try their hand at these fields. In this way, they also get to know interests and possibly jobs outside the typical role models and stereotypes, which it is essential to break down. This is also a great concern for me personally!”, said Minister for Women’s Affairs Susanne Raab.

Rector Sylvia Geyer was enthusiastic about the Summer Camp: “Technology is not a question of gender. Girls can do technology just as well as boys. But there are still hurdles in our society that suggest the opposite and cause them to doubt. That is why the ALMAH project is close to my heart. The girls and young women were able to get a taste of technology at the summer camp, female students from the university of applied sciences regularly give math learning help at *peppa, and our experts talk about their jobs on site, where the girls spend their free time. They are role models in the best sense of the word.”

Johannes H\u00f6hrhan, Managing Director of UAS Technikum Wien, welcomed the initiative and also emphasized the economic importance of getting more women interested in technical training and careers: “In view of the shortage of skilled workers, particularly in the technical field, the talent and expertise of women are indispensable for securing our future as a business location. The application phase for our degree programs starts on September 15 and we invite girls and women to find out more about our range of courses – they are very welcome!”

The Summer Camp is part of the ALMAH<\/a> project at UAS Technikum Wien. The project is carried out in cooperation between the university and the girls’ center *peppa and is financed by the Austrian Fund for the Empowerment and Promotion of Women and Girls Let\u2018s empower Austria<\/a>.
