{"id":64639,"date":"2025-01-20T10:45:03","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T10:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/content.technikum-wien.at\/?post_type=news&#038;p=64639"},"modified":"2025-09-08T09:21:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T09:21:01","slug":"second-place-in-isea-competition-running-surfaces-analysed-with-ai","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/content.technikum-wien.at\/en\/news\/second-place-in-isea-competition-running-surfaces-analysed-with-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Second Place in ISEA Competition: Running Surfaces Analysed with AI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div data-block=\"grid\" data-is-swiper=\"false\" data-columns=\"1\" data-bg-color=\"transparent\" data-vertical-alignment=\"start\" data-horizontal-alignment=\"start\" data-gap=\"s\" data-padding-top=\"2rem\" data-padding-bottom=\"2rem\" data-small-grid=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-ovl-grid\">\n<div data-block=\"grid-column\" class=\"wp-block-ovl-grid-column\">\n<p>A student at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien was awarded 2nd place in the International Sports Engineering Association&#8217;s (ISEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsengineering.org\/winners-of-the-2024-student-project-competition\/\">latest project competition<\/a>: Johannes Hafergut (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technikum-wien.at\/studiengaenge\/master-sports-technology\/\">Master&#8217;s programme Sports Technology<\/a>) developed a machine learning model that recognises different running surfaces based on raw data from an acceleration sensor. The K-Nearest-Neighbour algorithm (KNN) was selected with an accuracy of 86.4% because it best suited the project requirements. The model could be used in sports science and wearables to investigate correlations between running surfaces and injury risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the fourth year in a row that a student from the UAS Technikum Wien has achieved a place on the podium in this competition. The project was developed in the Machine Learning course by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/otto-hofst%C3%A4tter-858027a6\/\">Otto Hofst\u00e4tter<\/a>, in the Sports Engineering, Biomechanics &amp; Ergonomics field of expertise. This year, a student from Stanford University took first place, with a student from the Technical University of Munich taking third place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div data-block=\"grid\"
