In line with its motto Change our tomorrow,<\/em> the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien proudly hosted its tenth annual International Week from May 12 to 15, 2025, bringing together staff members of higher education institutions across the world to explore the transformative power of Third Mission<\/em> activities\u2014those that extend far beyond traditional teaching and research. With this year’s theme, Empowering Connections: Engaging Beyond the Campus<\/strong>, Technikum Wien spotlights the vital role of community outreach and societal engagement in shaping the future of higher education. As higher education redefines its role in society, events like this demonstrate that Third Mission<\/em> isn\u2019t a bonus\u2014it\u2019s essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The importance of students and staff as engaged citizens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The week began with a keynote that set a strong tone, emphasizing the importance students and staff members as engaged citizens: Corina du Toit from Stellenbosch University<\/a> shared powerful insights into SU\u2019s contributions to socio-economic transformation in South Africa, highlighting the university\u2019s deep-rooted commitment to community engagement. This was followed by Michael Str\u00e4hle of UAS Technikum Wien, who explored a philosophical approach to public engagement in science, underscoring how transparency and accessibility are key to building public trust. A panel discussion, moderated by Vice Rector Stefan Sauermann, brought together a diverse range of voices, offering country-specific perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eEvery student and staff member has a role to play as an engaged citizen\u201c, says Corina du Toit.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The various workshops throughout the week offered participants hands-on opportunities to translate ideas into tangible impact. Led by Martin Deinhofer and Christoph Veigl, one workshop focused on the co-design of assistive technologies<\/a>, giving attendees practical insight into inclusive innovation. Other sessions explored key topics such as digital accessibility in moodle, led by Gerda Huber, and barrier-free navigation<\/a> both inside and outside campus buildings, facilitated by Andrea Balz and Iris Nemec. These interactive sessions fostered collaboration while equipping participants with practical tools to enhance accessibility and inclusion in educational and public spaces. Participants also took part in \u201cLunch & Lehre\u201d, hosted by the Teaching and Learning Center, focusing on the Internationalization of the Curriculum\u2014a critical tool for weaving global perspectives into local teaching practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A glimpse into Brigittenau, the district of Vienna where the Technikum is located<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Led by the ever-charismatic Eugene Quinn<\/a>, participants also explored the southern side of Brigittenau, the district where Technikum Wien is located\u2014from Radio Orange and the Donaukanal nightlife, to bureaucratic landmarks, urban developments, and cultural curiosities like Adolf Hitler\u2019s former residence and the innovative smart city evolving at Nordwestbahnhof. This immersive experience grounded the conversations in local context, reminding participants that meaningful outreach starts with understanding our immediate surroundings. The week concluded in true Viennese style at Glacis Beisl, where new friendships and future collaborations were toasted over delicious local cuisine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platform for employees of higher education institutions from across Europe and beyond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The week provided a rich platform for staff members of higher education institutions from across Europe and beyond to exchange ideas, develop partnerships, and foster innovation grounded in social responsibility. By engaging with both local communities and international partners, institutions can not only address global challenges but also create more inclusive and impactful educational environments for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
