In December 2025, Michael Zarl<\/a> from K1-MET<\/a> was a guest at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien. As part of the course \u201cMechanical Engineering in Industrial Practice\u201d in the Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering<\/a>, the expert in metallurgical processes gave students exciting insights into current developments in the production of green steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

K1-MET<\/a> is one of the leading international metallurgical competence centers for ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy. In his presentation, Michael Zarl highlighted the technological approaches that will play a key role in the decarbonization of the steel industry in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Direct and Smelting Reduction of Steel with Hydrogen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The focus was on hydrogen-based direct and smelting reduction of iron ores, which are particularly important for Austria as a steel production location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students were actively involved in the lecture through questions, examples, and tasks to work out problems. This resulted in a practical examination of the challenges of the future industrial landscape from a metallurgical perspective. The guest lecture showed how important close exchange between universities and industry is for future-oriented education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
