The focus area Rehabilitation Engineering, Active Assistive Technologies (AAT) & Accessibility at the competence center Medical Engineering & Integrated Healthcare<\/em> is dedicated to the development, integration, and evaluation of technological solutions that promote rehabilitation<\/strong>, independence, participation, and quality of life across diverse user groups. The scope extends beyond people with disabilities<\/strong> and addresses the needs of individuals across different ages, abilities, and life situations in both public and private environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Core topics include prosthetics<\/strong>, orthotics<\/strong>, and general rehabilitation engineering, as well as active assistive systems<\/strong> (AAT) in medical engineering, augmentative and alternative communication<\/strong>, accessible design<\/strong> of environments and systems, and inclusive technologies<\/strong>. Teaching and research also cover the implementation of national and international regulations, standards, and equality frameworks, ensuring that technical innovation aligns with legal and societal requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A distinctive component of the focus area is the integration of  analogue and digital simulation scenarios<\/strong>, including the use of analogue aids (e.g. wheelchair, white cane) as well as immersive technologies that enable users to experience different types and degrees of visual impairments and to critically reflect on inclusive design in real-world contexts. Such approaches strengthen awareness for accessibility in public spaces, private environments, workplaces, healthcare settings, and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the Bachelor\u2019s programme Biomedical Engineering (BBE) and the Master\u2019s programmes Health & Rehabilitation Engineering (MGR) and Medical Engineering & eHealth (MME), students acquire in-depth competencies to design, implement, and evaluate innovative solutions \u2014 and to master interdisciplinary challenges at the interface of technology, healthcare, and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aligned with the strategic orientation of UAS Technikum Wien, the focus area combines technological excellence with social responsibility. It follows the principles of Universal Design<\/strong> and Equality<\/strong>, aiming to develop sustainable, practice-oriented, and user-centred solutions that create measurable impact and contribute to a more inclusive society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
