Histological working methods represent essential and indispensable teaching content in the training of specialists in the field of life sciences and health care, since histological analyses of cytoarchitecture and tissue morphology are used, for example, as routine procedures for diagnosis and therapy selection in medicine, but also to clarify specific questions in basic and applied research. Using this technology, similar to flow cytometry (Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting\/Scanning), a phenotypic and functional analysis of cells in a tissue is possible, but with site-specific information of each individual cell in the tissue. Histocytometry thus enables a previously unattainable depth of information in the analysis of histology sections. The technique of histocytometry is currently gaining ground and its potential is being recognized and exploited especially in basic research areas (e.g. cancer research, vascular research, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits and opportunities for histocytometry in application-related fields such as tissue engineering and ecotoxicology are more than evident, but have only recently been recognized and exploited. The additional benefit of an instrument for histocytometry is mainly in teaching. On the software side, the system allows rapid and precise recognition and classification of morphological tissue units or automated recognition of cell nuclei. These are just two examples of how artificial intelligence can be used to enable computer-aided and automated evaluation of histological samples. This technique would thus also represent a tapping point for many courses of study in the field of artificial intelligence. The digital image files created by the system are stored on a server and can be made available to researchers, teachers and students through targeted distribution of access rights. This so-called &#8220;virtual microscopy&#8221; enables (especially in times of the Covid-19 pandemic) the location- and time-independent use of the generated data for research and teaching He leads interdisciplinary research integrating engineering, biology, and materials science, with a focus on biomaterial development and tendon, muscle, and nerve tissue engineering.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>His work centers on the use of structural proteins\u2014particularly silk fibroin, as well as collagen and fibrin\u2014as functional materials in biomedical applications. He received his Venia docendi in 2020 in \u201cStructural Proteins as Materials in Biomedical Engineering\u201d from TU Wien and was a guest researcher at Tufts University (Boston) in 2016 in the lab of David Kaplan.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>He has developed innovative silk-processing technologies, including methods for sericin removal and controlled fiber architecture, enabling the translation of silk into clinically relevant regenerative solutions. He also contributed to understanding molecular mechanisms of regeneration, including shockwave-induced cell activation.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As coordinator of the City of Vienna project reacTIssue (2012), he initiated bioreactor development at UAS Technikum Wien, forming the basis for subsequent programs such as signalTissue. Standardized test procedures (e.g. OECD guidelines) are used to test the effects of substances on the environment and ultimately on humans.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The test systems established at the UAS Technikum Wien include terrestrial and aquatic model organisms of different trophic levels, starting with algae as producers, through daphnia as primary consumers and fish as secondary consumers, to bacteria as decomposers. Furthermore, in vitro test methods are available that enable the investigation of mechanisms of toxic effects at the cell biological-molecular level.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Another focus is on green chemistry, green product design and the circular economy. The evaluation of the actual environmental performance of chemicals, products and consumption systems is of key importance here. It is an interdisciplinary field that is dedicated to describing, recording and analyzing the musculoskeletal system of biological systems and the movements generated with it using the principles of physics and especially mechanics. In the competence center Sports Engineering, Biomechanics &amp; Ergonomics, biomechanics focuses not exclusively, but primarily on the analysis of movement sequences of the human body. This is applied in the field of rehabilitation technology as well as in ergonomics. One sub-discipline that is particularly strong in this competence center is sports biomechanics, which focuses on the analysis of athletic movement sequences in disabled, popular and elite sports with and without the use of sports equipment.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Both in the field of ergonomics and in the field of sports engineering, our focus is on analyzing the interaction between humans \u2013 equipment or humans \u2013 environment. Biomaterials, synthetic materials or materials of biological origin, which come into contact with the cells and bring them into a three-dimensional arrangement adapted to the natural model, play a decisive role here.
