Tailored to meet the specifications provided by clinical partners, this project aims to replicate the intricate mechanics of newborn breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simulating paediatric lung functionality poses unique challenges compared to adult models\u2014newborns exhibit extremely low tidal volumes, high breathing frequencies, and reduced overall lung volumes, all of which demand a high level of precision during data recording and system calibration. NeoNatSim addresses these challenges by adapting the xPULM framework to incorporate specialized sensors and high-resolution data logging, ensuring that even the subtle dynamics of neonatal respiration are captured accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key modifications include the integration of anatomically accurate airway replicas and the use of ex vivo animal lungs that reliably mimic the biomechanical properties of neonatal lung tissue. By recreating realistic spontaneous breathing patterns and response variations under different respiratory loads, NeoNatSim provides a reproducible and clinically relevant simulation environment. It is an interdisciplinary field that is dedicated to describing, recording and analyzing the musculoskeletal system of biological systems and the movements generated with it using the principles of physics and especially mechanics. In the competence center Sports Engineering, Biomechanics &amp; Ergonomics, biomechanics focuses not exclusively, but primarily on the analysis of movement sequences of the human body. This is applied in the field of rehabilitation technology as well as in ergonomics. One sub-discipline that is particularly strong in this competence center is sports biomechanics, which focuses on the analysis of athletic movement sequences in disabled, popular and elite sports with and without the use of sports equipment.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Both in the field of ergonomics and in the field of sports engineering, our focus is on analyzing the interaction between humans \u2013 equipment or humans \u2013 environment. Applications range from the development of disease models to the optimization of drug and biophysical therapeutic approaches. Molecular biology methods enable detailed analyses of the structure and function of cell components, and genes can be precisely modified in disease models using the CRISPR\/Cas method.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Our special focus is on the use of modern cell technologies for the development of regenerative therapies and tissue engineering - with the aim of producing or replacing human tissue destroyed by injury or disease as a model. Biomaterials, synthetic materials or materials of biological origin, which come into contact with the cells and bring them into a three-dimensional arrangement adapted to the natural model, play a decisive role here.
